Without a doubt, for storm protection, personal security, privacy, energy conservation, and convenience of operation, the rolling shutter is, for many Floridians, the product of choice.  They are typically not used to cover small openings. Roll down shutters are used on medium to large windows and are permanent fixtures that are attached to the building year round.  This makes them a perfect option for those seeking the added benefit of home or business security.  When in the down position, these shutters will prevent any intruders from entereing the building.  Also, perforated hinges allow you to see out while others can not see in!  This can help increase the level of security of your home or business as outside shadows or motion can be detected at all hours.  Those hinges also permit the free flow of air and sunlight while reflecting heat and saving you money on electricity.  They move up and down, vertically, and have many styling options available!  Roll Downs are available in a durable chromium & poweder coated finishes, which allows you to match their color to almost any color you desire!

In most cases, Roll Down shutters are the most expensive shutters you can get. The reason for this is that they can be open and closed from inside and have the unique option of being operated by an electrical switch. This means that with the flip of a switch your home or business can be closed up and protected from the elements, however, those looking to save a substantial amount of money may opt to use of a manual crank. In most cases, the crank is positioned on the outside of the building requiring you to operate the shutters from outside, however, the crank CAN be positioned so that the shutters are operated from the inside. This allows windows that are inaccessable from the outside to still be covered with Roll Down shutters.

For those looking to use Roll Down shutters to cover large openings, it is recomended that you have removable storm bars and a "hood stiffener" installed with your shutters. These optional accesories provide added protection and can be mounted from either the outside OR the inside of the building.  If interested, please ask for details!

For simplicity, the description of rolling shutters is in three categories: the upper housing or "box" into which the slats roll; the slats, which make up the body of the shutter; and the tracks, which guide and secure the slats.  Slats are the horizontal strips which move up or down in rollshutters.  Roll Downs are available with either "foam filled aluminum slats" or the thicker "extruded aluminum slats." Extruded aluminum slats are about twice as thick as the foam filled design which make them the strongest option available but are also a little bit more costly.

EXTRUDED ALUMINUM SLATS:  Extruded aluminum slats are usually extruded from 6063-T6 aluminum. Its profile reveals a double wall, the thickness of which is almost twice that of the foam-filled aluminum slat, and is therefore considered the strongest slat available. They are normally available in durable chromium & powder coated finishes in assorted colors, and are slightly more expensive than foam-filled aluminum slats—but offer superior strength.

STORM BARS:  MasterCraft highly recommends "removable" storm bars for larger width roll down shutters (inside/outside mounted). This, combined with a hood stiffener, provides excellent protection against storm and hurricane winds.
